MG GS teaser revealed; Set to Debut at London Motor Show
BANGKOK: The MG Motor has released a teaser image of its MG GS compact SUV, which is about to debut in at the London Motor Show in May. The British brand has earlier revealed the MG GS at the Shanghai Motor Show as a CS concept and has been running on the roads of China since last year. Now, the UK bound GS is set to go on sale from June this year. MG Motor is a Shanghai-based SAIC Motor-owned company and the most popular and fastest growing brand in UK with the ever growing sales in the country. To further increase the popularity of MG cars and to expand MG auto horizon, the British motor brand is entering the compact SUV segment in UK for the first time with the GS compact SUV. The brand has also revealed its two models; MG5 and MG CS at the Thailand Motor Expo last year.
According to the revealed teasers, the brand has retained the overall designing of the Chinese GS, which is designed by the team of Shanghai and Longbridge under MG Global Design Director, Anthony Williams-Kenny. It is designed to fit in the brand with a slightly different look from other MG cars. Somewhat similar to the Chinese-bound, it will have the small and simple grille sporting a signature Morris Garages insignia, slender and trapezoidal headlamps, and a dual-tone bumper. This mid-size five seater SUV measures 4500 mm long, 1855 mm wide and 1699 mm high and a bit lower than the Volkswagen Tiguan. The wheelbase of 2650 mm makes it longer than the Tiguan which was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. The new GS is also above Kia's Sportage and Honda CR-V when it comes to the size.
The UK-bound Compact SUV might be packed with the all-new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine featuring an all-wheel drive system and capable of producing the maximum power of 217 bhp along with the peak torque of 350Nm. Customers can also have the option of 1.5-litre engine same as the MG3's unit and the diesel variant which might be packed with a 1.8-litre engine. Depending on the engine, the new GS will come with a six-speed dual clutch, six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.
MG Motor is not the only brand to release the teaser of its upcoming GS compact SUV as Skoda has also revealed a teaser of its SUV which is likely to be called as Skoda Kodiak, which will be based on the MQB platform just like Volkswagen Tiguan.
