BANGKOK: The supreme German giant, Audi finally brought its compact SUV to the world stage at the Geneva Motor Show 2016. After being teased for few times, the teasers created a buzz around the automotive world regarding the new Q2, which is the smallest crossover to join the Audi’s ‘Q’ family. The studio images present the Q2 in two sparkling colors, Red and Yellow-Gold. It looks pretty attractive at a first glance, but seems to a higher version of the hatchback rather than the sporty crossover. Measuring 4191 mm in length, 1794 mm in width, 1508 mm in height along with the wheelbase of 2595 mm, this Audi compact SUV slots in just below the famous Audi Q3.
Based on the new VW’s MQB platform, the new Q2 will be available with front wheel drive option while the quattro AWD will be on offer in higher trims. The Q2 specs have also been deliberately out by the brand, which states that it will be available for grab in both, petrol as well diesel engines. 1.0-litre TFSI three-cylinder, 1.4 & 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder will join the petrol league while the 1.6 & 2.0-litre TDI four-cylinder will comprise the diesel range of the car. There is also a third diesel trim, which is yet to be confirmed by the company.
In terms of transmission, the car will come with a six-speed manual gearbox while an optional feature of 7-speed S Tronic DCT is also available. The officials also declared that there is a newly built DCT, which will adhere to the topmost TDI variants.
Cosmetically, it appears quite compact featuring Singleframe grille with the brand’s emblem embossed at the centre, wedge-shaped LED headlamps with DRLs, seamlessly integrated air vents lower down the bumper, door-mounted ORVMs, prominent black wheel arches and a glasshouse near its end. At the rear, it has tail lights, which are similar to that of Polo, a roof spoiler and a diffuser that give it a gracious ending.
Inside, it sports a virtual Audi cockpit, completely digital instrument cluster that has a large 12.3-inch screen and a head-up display. In addition to this, it has a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a MMI display on the dashboard. The red accents across the cabin give the Audi interior a sporty appeal. The brand also mentioned that there are multiple interior and exterior color options available for the customers to choose from.
Debuting in the crossover segment, it will lock horns with the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Mini Countryman. The market is expected to further spiced up with its launch as the customers will now have more options to explore.
